The formula you are about to learn is freakishly simple but powerful as a tropical storm. It applies to all kinds of hypnotic interaction. No matter if it is overt, covert, direct or indirect hypnosis you need to know your ABC’s… But first a tiny bit of history:

Animal Magnetism

Hypnosis training is best started by learning about the past and present of hypnosis itself.  The history of hypnosis reaches centuries back; it wasn’t until the 1880’s that hypnosis advanced from the ‘Dark Ages’ and into a more scientific realm.

It was then that a Scottish neurosurgeon by the name of James Braid came up with the term hypnotism.  Not only is James Braid responsible for coining the term hypnotism he is also responsible for the study that proved that hypnotism was not a product of magnetic fluids flowing through our bodies.

Braid spent time studying Animal Magnetism and Mesmerism and concluded from those studies that hypnosis could be induced by anyone as long as they followed a certain set of simple rules.

As James Braid has shown us through history there are rules to follow and steps to take to induce a person into a hypnotic state.

ABC – A Simplified Trance Formula

Since James Braid published started publishing on hypnosis topics in 18421, it has been pretty much accepted that we require 3 things for a hypnotic process to take effect. Expressed as the simple ABC formula, it gives us a unique key to using trances for ethical influence:

1. Attention

First you need to absorb the subjects attention. This requires you to be present and observant. Once you have their attention you can go to stage 2.

2. Bypass the Critical Factor

In hypnosis the Critical Factor (CF) is know as the annoying little voice in the back of your mind going “forget about it… Never gonna work… etc”
When people are resisting hypnotic trance it is the CF objecting to going into a hypnotic trance. This have to be bypassed (which you can learn here).

3. Communicate with the Unconscious Mind

Once you have bypassed the critical factor you will be able to present hypnotic suggestions. This can be don in a number of ways:
  • Conversational Hypnosis
  • Storytelling
  • General Process Language
  • Revivification
  • Direct Suggestion
  • Specific Therapeutic Techniques
Just remember this… Absorb Attention, Bypass CF and Communicate with the Unconscious mind… Now you know you ABC’s

    Hi Brian,

I like this simple introduction to the basics of hypnotism. Presented in a very easy to read manner, yet still breaks down the three basic obstacles in an easy to understand manner.

    Great post mate!
